An impacted tooth is a tooth that does not fully erupt into the right position. It may stay trapped under the gums, push against another tooth, or come in only partway. This often causes discomfort, swelling, crowding, or repeated irritation that does not go away on its own. Wisdom teeth are the most common example, but other teeth can become impacted as well. At Dunwoody Dental Health, we help patients understand what is happening and whether removal is the best next step. When pain begins suddenly, many people search for anΒ emergency dentist dunwoodyΒ because they want answers and reliefΒ quickly.

Oral Surgery Expertise for Impacted Teeth

Impacted teeth sometimes need more than a routine dental visit. If the tooth is stuck beneath the gums or pressing against nearby teeth, oral surgery may be the safest and most effective solution. We use imaging and a detailed exam to understand the position of the tooth before recommending treatment. Every case is different, so the plan should match your symptoms, age, and long-term oral health goals. Some patients feel nervous when they hear the word surgery, but many are surprised by how manageable the process feels once they know what to expect and have a clear plan inΒ place.

Understanding Tooth Impaction

A tooth becomes impacted when something blocks its normal path into the mouth. Sometimes there is not enough room in the jaw. In other cases, the tooth grows at an angle or another tooth is in the way. This can happen slowly over time, which is why some people do not realize there is a problem until pain starts. Others learn about it during an exam or X-ray before symptoms begin. Catching an impacted tooth early can help prevent future crowding, infection, or damage to neighboring teeth. Early treatment often gives you moreΒ options.

Types of Impacted Teeth

There are several ways a tooth can be impacted. A fully impacted tooth remains completely under the gums. A partially impacted tooth breaks through only partway, leaving an opening where food and bacteria can collect. Some teeth tilt sideways and push against nearby roots. Others stay upright but cannot move any farther because space is limited. Wisdom teeth commonly become impacted because they erupt last, when the mouth is already crowded. Canine teeth can also become impacted and may need special treatment to guide them into position rather than removeΒ them.

Signs of an Impacted Tooth

Symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people feel pressure in the jaw or soreness near the back teeth. Others notice swollen gums, bad breath, headaches, difficulty chewing, or pain that comes and goes. A partially impacted tooth may also lead to recurring gum irritation or infection. Because symptoms are not always constant, it is easy to ignore the problem until it worsens. If discomfort starts suddenly, patients often search for an emergency dentist in Dunwoody because impacted teeth can become painful without much warning. A quick evaluation can help identify theΒ cause.

Treatment Options for Impacted Teeth

Treatment depends on the tooth involved and whether it is causing problems. In some cases, monitoring the tooth over time may be enough. If pain, infection, crowding, or damage is present, removal is often recommended. For impacted canines or other important teeth, we may discuss exposing the tooth and guiding it into place instead. We explain every option clearly so you understand the benefits and timing before deciding. Some patients dealing with multiple missing teeth also ask aboutΒ same day dentures near dunwoodyΒ while planning broader restorative care after extractions or oral surgeryΒ treatment.

What to Expect During Impacted Tooth Surgery

Most patients feel better once they understand how the procedure works. Before treatment, we review images, explain the steps, and answer questions so there are no surprises. The area is numbed thoroughly, and sedation may be available if you feel anxious. If the tooth is below the gums, a small opening may be made to access it safely. Our focus is comfort, precision, and protecting nearby tissue. Afterward, we provide clear instructions for healing, eating, and managing soreness. Many people say the anticipation felt harder than the procedureΒ itself.

Dr. Zainab was AMAZING! Very informative and helped me better understand my oral health. Everling took really good care of me during my x-rays and made sure I was comfortable. During check-in/check-out Sieeda was very patient with me scheduling my next follow up visits. These ladies were truly outstanding and made my experience great.

This office, doctors and team are amazing. I can definitely tell it’s under new ownership (been coming here for a while) because of all of changes - they are in network with my insurance (and most PPOs they said), technology upgrades everywhere and they quoted everything accurately upfront. The previous ownership didn’t quote correctly and later found out they were out of network. If you go to an out of network place near here, give this place a try. They offer better service with in network prices. For past and future patients (read past reviews), ignore them and come back. It doesn’t represent the new changes. Everyone was amazing! Thanks Dunwoody Dental Health - will be a long time customer!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had an amazing experience at Dunwoody Dental Health! From the moment I walked in, the staff was welcoming, professional, and genuinely caring. The office is modern, spotless, and very comfortable, which immediately put me at ease. The dental team took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure I was comfortable throughout my visit. The hygienist was gentle yet thorough, and the dentist was knowledgeable, attentive, and honest about treatment options. I never felt rushed or pressured. This is easily the best dental experience I’ve had, and I highly recommend Dunwoody Dental Health to anyone looking for top-quality care with a personal touch.

I’ve been trying to get my mom to leave her old dentist for years and she finally decided to come here. She had a really good experience with her consult and cleaning. The dentist, Dr. Adnan is really good at explaining everything and has great bedside manner. We highly recommend this practice!
